Inflection/intonation

這是一組很難區分的詞，二者都帶有“語音；語調；語調的變化之意”。我們先來看Intonation，這個詞的詞根是tone，即語調、語氣。因此，用intonation的場合是根據這個句子是什麼類型的而定（Intonation is the rise and fall of pitch in a phrase or a sentence.）。在英語裡面，一般的陳述句我們都用平調，否定句/祈使句用降調，疑問句一般用升調，如In English, some questions have a rising intonation. 近二十年來，在年輕人中流行把升調用在陳述句中，對我這等老派的人物來說，心理嚴重不適。我還是喜歡廣播、電視中那些升降交替的播音員的說話方式。

再說inflection，是指在一句話中的某個詞或某個音的升降變化（Inflection refers to the gentle rise and fall of the voice in a word or syllable.）。比如下面這句：

I will go to the cinema with Judy on Sunday.

你在哪個詞上面加重讀音，就表明你想強調哪個詞，所以這句話可以有如下的讀法：

I will go to thecinemawith Judy on Sunday.（強調去電影院而非別處）

I will go to the cinema withJudyon Sunday.（強調跟Judy去而非他人）

I will go to the cinema with Judy onSunday.（強調週日而非其他時候）
