They invoked help in the desperate situation. 他們在走投無路的情況下懇求援助。

Be desperate for…: 極需，極度渴望

He's desperate for a glass of water. 他極想喝一杯水。

We're desperate for money. 我們極需錢。

Desperately: adv. 拼命地,  絕望地,  極嚴重地,  孤注一擲地

They desperately wanted a child. 他們非常想要有一個孩子。

He searched desperately for something to say. 他搜腸刮肚，想找點話說。

Make the most of …: 充分把握……，充分利用……最大限度地利用
