Shenzhen surpasses 500 supercharging stations, outnumbering gas stations
Shenzhen now boasts over 370,000 charging stations and more than 500 supercharging stations, making it the first city in China to exceed both the number of gas stations and fuel dispensers. In recent years, the production of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in Shenzhen has surged—from just 299,500 vehicles in 2021 to 874,700 in 2022, and reaching 1.73 million in 2023, the highest in the nation. Following its reputation as the "First City for NEVs," Shenzhen is now quickly emerging as "a city of supercharging."
Charging an electric vehicle in Shenzhen is now extremely convenient. Residents can use the "iShenzhen" mobile app to locate the nearest supercharging station, scan the QR code on the charging station, and begin charging instantly. The integrated demonstration stations, which integrate light storage and charging, and vehicle-to-network interaction, offer a maximum power output of 640 kW, making them 10 times faster than regular charging stations. Charging 100 kWh takes just 10 minutes. Typically, a household vehicle requires seven to eight hours to fully charge using a slow charging station, and one to two hours with a fast charging station. However, with a supercharging station, a vehicle can be charged to 80% or more in just 10 minutes or less, greatly enhancing the charging experience.
Shenzhen plans to further expand its new energy vehicle charging infrastructure, aiming to install 50,000 charging stations by 2024. The construction task has already surpassed the halfway mark.
In addition to infrastructure development, Shenzhen is pioneering the establishment of charging standards for electric vehicles. It was the first to release local standards for the graded evaluation of supercharging equipment and the design of supercharging stations. These standards include the introduction of terms like "supercharging equipment" and "fully liquid-cooling supercharging equipment," and established that the rated power for a single-gun supercharging unit should not be less than 480 kW.
Regarding payment for charging, Shenzhen's supercharging stations support multiple charging initiation methods, including mobile app scanning, card swiping, VIN, Bluetooth, and orderly charging. The operating service system is equipped with online top-up and payment capabilities, supporting mobile payments and UnionPay cards.
